Old School Cottage

Description

The Old School is set at the edge of the tranquil village of Toller Porcorum in a conservation area by the River Hooke valley in Thomas Hardy's beloved Dorset countryside which is within easy reach of the beautiful Heritage Coast, with beautiful views of the open countryside. Old School Cottage is situated in an ideal centre for visiting such places as Burton Bradstock (8 miles), West Bay/Bridport (8 miles), Beaminster (8 miles) and the county town of Dorchester (11 miles). Weymouth, Lyme Regis and Abbotsbury, with its' famous swannery and tropical gardens are all within the surrounding area including Eggardon Hill just 2 miles away, with fantastic views of the lovely countryside stretching to the coast. The neighbouring village of Maiden Newton has a grocery shop, public house, garage and newsagents with a coffee shop at the rear which serve excellent home cooked lunches. Originally converted from part of The Old School, The Old School Cottage is a single story dwelling with level access except for 2 small steps at the entrance and 1 step into each of the showers. There are 2 bedrooms each with an ensuite shower room. The kitchen is well equipped with an electric cooker, microwave, fridge with large freezer, electric kettle and toaster. Accommodates sleeping for 4 people, although can sleep 14 people if The Upper School, Lower School and Little School are reserved for the same period From mid 2011 there will be a shared laundry room with a washing machine and tumble dryer which will be coin operated, and there is a washing line by the apple tree in the garden. There is garden furniture at the front of the property and also in the garden to the rear. Please feel free to have a barbeque if you wish. It is situated close to the end of a no through road and commands stunning views across the beautiful Dorset countryside. There are many good walks in the area, especially as it within close proximity to a footpath which takes you into the open countryside and within easy walking distance of The Kingcombe Nature Reserve. There is a wealth of wildlife in the surrounding area, often deer can be seen from the cottage enjoying the village recreation area! Buzzards are numerous, the great spotted and green woodpeckers have made their home in the area as well many as foxes and badgers. The nearby Kingcombe Centre (approx. 1 mile) often arrange natural walks on Wednesday afternoons followed by tea and cake. For garden lovers, Forde Abbey near Chard, Montecute House, Abbotsbury Tropical Gardens and Kingston Maurward are all well a worth visit. Children (and adults) will enjoy a visit to Monkey World, the animal farm and swannery at Abbotsbury, the Sea Life Museum, Bovington Tank Museum, the Dorchester Dinosaur musuem and Yeovilton Air Museum. eer37 eir44

Bridport in Dorset is a market town situated near the coast where the River Brit flows into the sea. Originally a fishing port and rope-making town, the former harbour, once known as Bridport Harbour, is now known as West Bay and the area is now better known as a tourist location. Indeed West Bay has featured in a number of films and TV series including ‘The Navy Lark’ and ‘Harbour Lights’.

The railway once connected West Bay to the mainline, but as with many local branch-lines the Beeching cuts led to its closure, and the former line now provides an excellent route for cyclists, with the old station at West Bay becoming a fine cafe.

Accommodation is well provided for in the area, especially for those seeking self-catering accommodation with a wide variety of holiday lets available on Go2 for search and comparison.
